How to Drive Traffic to Your Website

by Brian Horn on July 21, 2010

As any small business marketer knows, the key ingredient to a successful website is getting people to actually visit it. The more people that come, the more sales you make no matter the conversion ratio.

There are many ways to accomplish having large volumes of website traffic. A successful site owner will utilize all aspects of website marketing to gain the highest number of visitors that their business can handle.

Let’s start with viral marketing. Think of viral marketing as the snowball effect. One person tells two people and those two tell four people. Soon enough you’ll have a plethora of snowflakes wondering what your site is all about.

Word of mouth is, has been and always will be a great form of viral marketing. If you provide a product or service that someone loves, they will be sure to tell their friends and family all about it. Sending “shout outs” through social networks like Facebook and Twitter, is another way to market virally.

Writing articles and press releases and publishing them on the web are also great ways to improve website traffic. When writing articles, be sure to write about something relevant to your site.

For example, if you are selling green widgets, write about using the green widget, how a green widget can save the earth or why green widgets are necessary. Be sure to include a byline with your information and a link to your site.

There are many article-publishing sites on the Internet that let you post your article for free. That’s one extra link to your site. When someone else comes along and publishes your article, you have just gained their site traffic as well.

And finally, the most expensive way to get website traffic is paid advertising. You can advertise with print ads in newspapers and magazines or on the web. Search for sites that share the same demographic audience and ask them how you can advertise on their site.

Banner ads are colorful, eye catching and provide just one click away from a sale on your website. You can also use pay per click programs such as Google Adwords. Be careful of your budget. This can add up quickly.

As you can see, there are many ways to get people to visit your website. A diverse basket of marketing strategies will always prove successful. Almost any link to your site is a good one, for one link on the web is worth at least two visitors to your site.
