How Successful Leaders REALLY Manage People

One day, while personally wandering the park, then-CEO of Disney, Michael Eisner instantly and summarily fired the entire chorus line of one of the shows.

Why?

“Because they didn’t have ‘the Disney smile.’”

It takes COURAGE to manage that way, but it is the only way to really manage if you understand how linked and co-mingled your small business marketing is to your rank ‘n file employees’ routine interaction with customers and prospects.

First, there has to be a “Program” — fully enunciated and frequently and repetitively presented expectations about behavior, right down to the smile.

Then, second, those who won’t get with or stick to The Program, gotta go.

Now, not later. Ruthlessly, not gently. Publicly, visibly set on fire as examples, not quietly, gently ushered out the back door. There must be sufficient rewards for “successful behavior”; there must be swift and consistent justice, severe and profound penalty for “bad behavior.”

passionate employees are the lifeblood of any organization…
passionate employees can make all the difference in how customers perceive your company…

Mr Eisner fired them, not because they couldn’t sing or carry a tune – he fired them for lack of passion.

The more passion you have the more people will believe in you, the more people will buy from you, the more profit you will make.

Sounds like he should have fired the SVP of Passion

Right on the money as usual Dan…
-But it is harder to do than to say.

SVP Passion sounds like a must have position for any company. No passion, no job.

A priceless Eisner note from an internal memo:

“Success tends to make you forget what made you successful… We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make history. We have no obligation to make a statement…

Our only obligation is to make money.”

Says a lot about Disney truly realizing it is in the marketing business, not the movie, ride, food, or even the entertainment business.

I am happy to say that I wear a “No BS Shirt” all day every day. This is a special shirt that only my staff and I can see. I wake up almost every morning trying to get really wealthy and find this challenge to be quite rewarding. Bad staff are like a bad movie you can sit and wait but they don’t get better. I choose to only watch blockbusters!

It’s one thing trying to make yourself wealthy………….

If you concentrate on making your clients and affilliates wealthy you are guaranteed success.
