I wasted my time and energy trying to get this point through the thick, old-dog heads of the sales managers and executives at the yellow pages publisher I worked for, then finally took your advice, Dan, and just did it myself.  Using your advice, it was just too easy to win just about every single contest, award and promotion and make more money than other reps while enjoying a lot less stressful and easier job.
