What's the Real Problem Written by Dan Kennedy on September 2nd, 2010 9:37:34 am EST On Tuesday, I talked about a not so favorable topic "....a war of choice or a war of necessity?" Now, I'm going to talk about another topic that needs addressed. Solving The Wrong Problem Solving The Right Problem With The Wrong Solution Neglecting The Best Opportunity A while back, I hosted an impromptu one day seminar in Cleveland*, attended by about 30 Inner Circle Members from six states and Canada. Mostly 'hot seats', Q/A and discussions of several topics. One subject was 'business re-invention.' I did two hot seats, with two different women, in different businesses but with common problems; in both cases, it was very clear to me, and quickly became clear to the others in the room, that both had severe core business and economics problems that cannot be solved with a better ad or marketing advice. On the spot, I reinvented both business for their owners, if I say so myself, brilliantly; in both cases, based on real experience with real clients, and in both cases, I supported my suggestions with examples. One of these business owners carefully considered what was being said, asked thoughtful questions and then embraced the opportunity unearthed. The other was painfully resistant – visible in body language, audible in questions, demonstrable in the "can't do that" responses every step of the way. [continue reading]
Keyword Tips That Will Help You Get Ranked Higher in the Search Engines Written by Brian Horn on September 1st, 2010 7:28:02 am EST If you are running or own a website, then you probably already know the importance of having quality keywords. Having the wrong keywords can result in lowered rankings, decreased traffic and lost customers. While understanding the importance of keywords is a good start, you must also have a successful keyword strategy in order to really see an increase in your traffic and conversions. Once you have a better idea of what your customers are looking for, you can select keywords that will bring them to your site. The most critical element of any keyword strategy is performing keyword research. Many people make the mistake of trying to get their site to rank for searches that only consist of one word. Is It Choice or Necessity? Written by Dan Kennedy on August 31st, 2010 9:39:22 am EST You may remember an interview the late Tim Russert on 'Meet The Press' did with President Bush, where Russert asked him if Iraq was a war of choice or a war of necessity. I have often used the language "on the business battlefield", because for most entrepreneurs, there is, in fact, a battlefield, where we joust with clear and present threats to productivity, profit and peace of mind, shoot to kill distractions, and march toward uncertainty and sudden danger. Like everyone else in America, the entrepreneur chooses his life and lifestyle. Ours is a war of choice, although arguably also of compulsion. However I would like to re-emphasize a warning about a new war of necessity for the business owner. [continue reading]
Is It Time For You To Pull Off A Publicity Stunt? Written by Dan Kennedy on August 30th, 2010 9:48:50 am EST I want to talk about one of my favorite, things…publicity stunts. You probably remember that famous Super Bowl when Janet Jackson exposed her breast. Like President Bush, I'd dozed off during the game and I don't have TIVO. What's funny to me, is you'd think she and the nitwits at MTV/CBS had invented something. Lady Godiva rode stark naked through town on a horse. Bill Veck sent a midget into bat. Joe Cossman had a train carload of potatoes delivered to the street outside 'The Tonight Show', when he was on with Carson, to promote his Spud Gun. These stunts are as old as, well, Lady Godiva. Nothing new here. [continue reading]
2 Essential Tools Written by Dan Kennedy on August 27th, 2010 9:26:29 am EST Let's talk about essential resources for everybody. Lift A Finger. A couple weeks ago, I got a FAX from a client for whom I'd done an ad. He wanted my thoughts on replacing the word 'desperate' in its headline. Now, I'm NOT complaining about his request per se. Really, I'm not. He paid his money; it's my job to re-write, not his. So no gripe about that. But it made me think (again) of the umpteen numbers of questions and requests I do get from Members that they really ought to answer for themselves. [continue reading]
